The Victoria Cross

Updated on March 20, 2013

The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest decoration awarded to British and Commonwealth service personnel. Introduced by Queen Victoria on the 29th January 1856, originally to award valour in the Crimean War, 1,361 VCs have been awarded but only 14 since the Korean War.

The medal consists of a red ribbon and a bronze cross depicting a lion over a crown with the inscription "For Valour".

New Victoria Cross to be awarded

A post-humous Victoria cross is to be awarded to Lance Corporal James Ashworth of the Grenadier Guards, who died last year after crawling within grenade throwing distance of an enemy sniper who had his unit pinned down. His actions saved the lives of his comrades, although he paid the ultimate sacrifice in return.

The Enemy Within Appeal

Combat Stress is the UK's leading provider of support for those suffering from the psychological effect of war. On average sufferer's struggle on their own for 14 years before finally asking for help to deal with their condition and with the ongoing wars the number of soldiers suffering from these invisible wounds continues to rise.

Bryan Budd

Corporal Bryan Budd of 3 Para was awarded the VC posthumously on 14 December 2006 for his actions in Afghanistan. The first cited incident on 27 July was for leading an assualt on Taliban gunmen while on a patrol, allowing a wounded soldier to be evacuated and enabling him to receive lifesaving treatment.

On 20th August, three sections were on patrol in head high corn when Corporal Budd spotted Taliban and tried to flank them with his section. They came under heavy fire and knowing his section would probably be killed he rushed the Taliban, allowing his section to withdraw and the casualties be treated. He was declared missing and when they went back his body was found next to three dead Taliban. An inquest determind that he was probably killed by friendly fire.

Johnson Beharry

Private Johnson Beharry (since promoted to Lance Corporal) was the first person to be awarded the VC since Lieutenant Colonel H. Jones and Sergeant Ian John McKay in the Falklands and the first living recepient since 1969.

He was awarded the VC on 18 March 2005 for his actions in twice saving his platoon from ambushes on 1 May & 11 June 2004, in Al-Amarah, Iraq. Sustaining serious head injuries in the second incident.

The Unknown Soldier

The U.S. Unknown Soldier was awarded a Victoria Cross on 11th November 1921. The UK's Unknown Warrior was given the US Medal of Honour.

VC and Bar

(Holders of 2 VCs)

Only three people have ever been awarded 2 Victoria Crosses. The first was Captain Arthur Martin-Leake of the Royal Army Medical Corps. He won his first VC in 1901 for actions under heavy fire during the Anglo-Boer war and received the bar during World War 1 in 1914 while serving with the 46th Field Ambulance.

The second double VC winner was Captain Noel Godfrey Chavasse also of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Chavasse earned both VCs during the First World War, the first was for treating and bringing back wounded soldiers from No-Man's Land under heavy fire, over 9th and 10th August 1916 at Guillemont, France. In total he rescued 20 wounded men and buried 3 officers in No-Man's Land. The bar was awarded post-humously for the period 31st July to 2nd August 1917 when he refused to leave his post, continuing to rescue wounded men while under heavy fire despite being severely wounded himself.

The final holder of the VC and bar is New Zealander Captain Charles Upham who earned both awards during World War 2. Serving in the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Upham won his first VC while a second Lieutenant during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. He'd been promoted to Captain by the time he won the bar in July 1942 at the First Battle of El Alamein.

VC Olympic Gold Medallist

Lieutenant Philip Neame of the Corps of Royal Engineers was awarded the VC for actions on the 19 December 1914, when he single handedly help up a German advance for 45 minutes with a bombing attack and rescuing as many wounded men as could be moved.

In 1924 Philip Neame won an Olympic Gold medal for Great Britain in the Men's 100 metre team running deer, double shots event. In this event each shooter in a 4 man team gets 10 lots of 2 shots at a moving target simulating a deer, with each shot being marked between 0-5.

In the 2nd World War Neame reached the rank of Lieutenant-general, being taken prisoner in 1941 during the North African Campaign. After several attempted escapes while prisoner in Italy, Philip succeeded in escaping with Air Marshal Owen Boyd and Major-General Richard O'Connor. He died on 28 April 1978.

Netley Military Hospital

In 1856 The Netley Military Hospital was built for treatment of wounded soldiers. Queen Victoria laid a times capsule underneath the foundation stone containing coins, a Crimean Medal and a Victoria Cross.

Netley Military Hospital was used during both World Wars but it was eventually demolished in 1966 as it cost too much to run. The Victoria Cross was moved to the Army Medical Services Museum, Ash near Aldershot.

Navy VC

When the Victoria Cross was first commisioned the red ribbon was only for army recepients. Navy recepients' VCs featured a dark blue ribbon with these being the respective colours associated with the forces. However with the creation of the Royal Air Force in 1918 (originally known as the Royal Flying Corps) it was decided that all VCs should use the red ribbon (the colour of the RAF is a pale blue). King George V signed a warrant to this effect on 22 May 1920 and all living recipients of the Navy Victoria Cross had to exchange their blue ribbons for red ones.

The Royal Navy has provided a total of 117 VC recepients.

The Sevastapol Cannons

The Origin of The VC's Metal

It was originally intended that the VCs would be cast from the bronze cascabels of two cannons that were captured from the Russians at the siege of Sevastopol. X-rays of older Victoria Crosses have since proven that the metal used for VCs is in fact from antique Chinese guns and not of Russian origin. One theory is that the guns were originally Chinese weapons but the Russians captured them and reused them at Sevastopol. It is believed that another source of metal was used between 1942 and 1945 to create five Second World War VCs when the Sevastopol metal went missing.

The barrels of the Sevastapol cannon are stationed outside the Officers' Mess at the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich. The remaining portion of the only remaining cascabel, weighing 358 oz (10 kg), is stored in a vault maintained by 15 Reg Royal Logistic Corps at Donnington, Telford. It can only be removed under armed guard. It is estimated that approximately 80 to 85 more VCs could be cast from this source.

A single company of jewellers, Hancocks of London, has been responsible for the production of every VC awarded since its inception.

Dickin Medal

"The Animal's VC"

During World War 2 the bravery of animals used in active service was noticed, and the founder of animal charity the PDSA, Maria Dickin, decided to introduce a medal for animals showing conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while attached to either the armed forces or civil defence service.

Widely regarded as the "Animal's Victoria Cross", the Dickin's medal has been awarded 64 times with the recipients compromising of 28 dogs, 1 cat, 3 horses and 32 pigeons. More details about the Dickin medal can be found here.
